On Monday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency and activated up to 1,000 National Guard troops after shootings in protests in Atlanta over the weekend, leaving five people dead and at least 30 people injured. While left-leaning articles highlight that the number of shootings in Atlanta were double this year, right-leaning articles highlight that the presence of Guardsmen will allow police officers to increase patrols elsewhere.

A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that the number of shootings and murders in Atlanta were double this year compared to 2019 for the four-week period following Memorial Day. During the protests following the death of George Floyd, Kemp activated as many as 500 National Guard troops to protect people and property in Atlanta.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that the Atlanta Police Department is offering a reward in the killing of 8-year-old Secoriea Turner, who was shot Saturday night near a Wendys. Less than 24 hours later, a 53-year-old man was also killed near this spot.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that authorities said that Turner was in the car with her mother and another adult when two people opened fire on their vehicle. The Guardsmen will protect state buildings, the governor’s mansion, and the headquarters for the Department of Public Safety, freeing police officers to increase patrols on roadways.
