On Thursday, the House passed a sweeping police reform package that would end certain legal protections for officers accused of misconduct and ban chokeholds. While left-leaning articles highlight that the reform package is the most ambitious set of proposed changes to policing in decades, right-leaning articles highlight that the “cancel culture left” prevents real progress from being made.
The Boston Globe published a right-leaning article highlighting that the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is the most ambitious set of proposed changes to police procedures and accountability in decades. The article notes that the two parties are in a stalemate over policing, almost ensuring that no legislation will become law.
A centrist article by USA Today reports that the House bill was crafted by the Congressional Black Caucus and aims to bolster police accountability. However, Philomena Wankenge, a co-founder of the activist group Freedom Fighters D.C., doesn’t think measures in the House and Senate go far enough.
Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Representative Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, accused the “cancel culture left” of preventing real progress on matters such as police reform. Jordan also said the House Democrats’ police reform bill is not the best bill, and that Tim Scott’s legislation was the strongest one.
