After two weeks of holiday break, on Friday, Senate leaders continued to try to wrangle over the terms of President Trump’s impeachment trial, deepening their impasse.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times reports that there are no direct negotiations between Senate leaders scheduled, nor any indication of when House Speaker Pelosi might send the articles of impeachment. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, stepped onto the Senate floor asking for Trump’s top advisors and key witnesses to testify as part of the impeachment trial.

NPR published a centrist article highlighting that Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, is under close scrutiny from Democrats and fellow Republicans ahead of the impeachment vote, as she is among the potential swing votes, and already faces a difficult reelection in a deeply divided state. Collins has called McConnell’s declaration to coordinate with the White House inappropriate but also chastised Democrats such as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren for saying she’s ready to convict the president.

A right-leaning article by Breitbart News reports that during McConnell’s floor speech on Friday, he berated Democrats for rushing through a “slapdash investigation” and mocked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. McConnell stated that as long as Pelosi continues to withhold the articles of impeachment, the Senate cannot hold a trial. “So, for now, we are content to continue the ordinary business of the Senate while House Democrats continue to flounder,” he warned. “For now.”
