Julián Castro announced in a video on Twitter on Thursday that he has ended his presidential campaign. Castro was the former housing secretary and was the only Latino candidate in the Democratic field.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times reports that Castro portrayed himself as an unapologetic liberal who was shaped by his humble beginnings and championed progressive policy. Castro shaped the national conversation about border control and immigration reform and was viewed as a potential vice-presidential pick by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

A centrist article by NPR reports that Castro often criticized the Democratic Party itself, and also criticized President Trump on NPR as “the biggest identity politician” in modern politics. Castro often praised the support of his family. However, in an interview with The Washington Post in early October, Rosie Castro argued that her son was not climbing in the polls partly because of media coverage.

A right-leaning article by National Review emphasizes that Castro made immigration reform a central part of his platform and fought to end Section 1325 of the Immigration and Naturalization Act, which makes “improper entry” into the U.S. a federal misdemeanor. The article also reports that Castro’s opponents took to Twitter to react to the news and thanked Castro for his service.
