Top White House adviser Peter Navarro warned Trump administration officials in late January that the coronavirus crisis would cost the United States trillions of dollars and put millions of Americans at risk of illness or death. While left-leaning articles highlight that Navarro’s second memo directed members of the White House Task Force to manage the crisis, right-leaning articles highlight that Navarro’s first memo warned that the pandemic could cost the country up to $5.7 trillion.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that a second memo that Navarro wrote, dated Feb. 23, seemed aimed at members of the White House Task Force established by President Trump to manage the crisis, reflecting divisions within the administration on how to proceed with the coronavirus threat. The article also notes that Navarro’s memo is evidence that some in the upper ranks of the administration considered the possibility of the outbreak turning into something more serious than Trump was acknowledging publicly at the time.

USA Today published a centrist article reporting that on Tuesday, President Trump said he has not seen memos where one of his top advisers warned earlier this year that a coronavirus pandemic could endanger millions of Americans, and that even if he had, it wouldn’t have changed his response to the crisis. Despite warnings from Navarro, Trump has claimed that “nobody” could have predicted the coronavirus pandemic.

A right-leaning article by Fox News reports that Navarro’s first memo warned of up to $5.7 trillion in economic costs and up to a half-million American deaths in a worst-case scenario. Navarro also said that he believed the U.S. “CAN develop vaccine and treatment therapeutics in half the usual time.”
