On Friday, the disclosure of new exculpatory information led to speculation that the exoneration of Michael Flynn, President Trump’s first national security advisor, could be imminent. While left-leaning articles highlight U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Flynn was tormented by “dirty cops,” right-leaning articles highlight that the FBI openly questioned if they should get Flynn to lie.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that Trump said on Thursday that his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, was tormented by “dirty cops” as part of the probe into whether Russia helped Trump win the White House in 2016. Internal FBI documents turned over by the Justice Department showed FBI officials debated whether and when to warn Flynn that he could face criminal charges.
The Hill published a centrist article reporting that Flynn’s current lawyer, Sidney Powell, and other champions of Flynn’s cause have long claimed that he did not lie to investigators, maintaining that Flynn was coerced into pleading guilty nearly a year later by special counsel Robert Mueller’s team of hyper-aggressive prosecutors. Powell filed a submission with the court after the DOJ’s revelations last Friday.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that bombshell documents show the FBI discussing if their “goal” in interviewing Flynn in January 2017 was “to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired.” Former U.S. Attorney for Utah Brett Tolman told Fox News that the Flynn case needs to be dismissed, as there is exculpatory evidence that was withheld.
