On Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all beaches and state parks in Orange County to temporarily close on Thursday, after images in the news showed crowds gathering on beaches there and violating the state’s physical distancing rules. While left-leaning articles highlight that some states continue to reopen its beaches, right-leaning articles highlight that Newsom’s order is likely to garner pushback from local residents.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that while Gov. Gavin Newsom shut down the beaches in Orange County, Alabama moved to reopen its beaches, with Texas doing the same in parts of the state Friday. The article also notes that the federal guidelines encouraging people to curtail nearly all public activities expired Thursday when President Trump did not extend them, as Iowa, North Dakota, and Wyoming were among other states planning to ease their rules.

A centrist article by NPR reports that activity seen on only a few beaches threatened the progress California has made in battling the coronavirus. Concern over infection and hospitalization rates in the county was part of the Orange County closure calculation, although local officials in Orange County have said the majority of beachgoers were following distancing rules.

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Newsom’s order is likely to ignite pushback from community leaders who argue they can safely provide some relief to residents. Last weekend, some 80,000 people flocked to Newport Beach, south of Los Angeles, and additional thousands gathered at open beaches northwest of Los Angeles.
