House Speaker Nancy Pelosi named seven Democratic lawmakers Wednesday to a panel overseeing trillions of dollars in coronavirus stimulus funds. While left-leaning articles highlight that the panel is meant to be bipartisan, right-leaning articles claim that the creation of the committee is part of Democrats’ plan to impeach Trump.
A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that the panel is meant to be bipartisan, as it consists of seven Democrats and five Republicans. The panel will investigate how the trillions of dollars already approved by Congress for coronavirus relief are being used.
USA Today published a centrist article reporting that the panel will be led by House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., and includes the chairs of the Financial Services Committee, the House Oversight Committee, and the House Small Business Committee. Pelosi and Clyburn compared the effort to the Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, created in 1941 by then Senator Harry Truman, and conducted hundreds of hearings, and saved millions in cost overruns.
Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that the members appointed to serve on the committee were outspoken during the House impeachment inquiry, with some, like Waters, advocating for the president’s removal throughout his administration. A spokesman for McCarthy on Wednesday blasted the creation of the committee altogether, noting to Fox News that Speaker Pelosi has chosen to pursue “impeachment 2.0 with a partisan and unnecessary oversight committee.”
