On Tuesday, former President Barack Obama officially endorsed his former vice president, Joe Biden. While left-leaning articles highlight that Obama’s endorsement was meant to energize younger, progressive voters, right-leaning articles highlight that Obama’s endorsement came too late.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that Obama’s goal for announcing his support for Biden was to energize the many younger and more progressive voters who dislike or distrust Biden. Obama’s announcement was timed to follow Sanders’ endorsement of Biden on Monday, and both were delayed for a few days by the Passover and Easter holidays.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that Obama framed his endorsement of Biden by talking about the leadership he says is required to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. The article also notes that although Biden has continuously talked about Barack throughout his campaign, he specifically requested Obama not to endorse him during the primary process.

A right-leaning article by The Washington Examiner highlights that Obama endorsed Biden only after it actually mattered, as Biden underwent a full year of “completely fabricated news cycles from the media” without one person with “an iota of power in the party” coming to his defense. The article also notes that Obama has previously endorsed candidates that have lost, such as Hillary Clinton, Stacey Abrams, Andrew Gillum, and Bill Nelson.
