House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accused China of threatening “democracy itself” during a visit to Taiwan that sparked outrage from China and crisis mitigation efforts from the Biden administration. While left-leaning articles focus on crisis avoidance from the White House, right-leaning articles focus on Pelosi’s critiques of the Chinese Community party.

A left-leaning article from The Washington Post discusses how White House officials caution that China is potentially gearing up for retaliation for Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.  White House spokesman John Kirby said that “we’ve seen a number of announcements from the [People’s Republic of China] in just the last several hours that are unfortunately right in line with what we had anticipated… China has positioned itself to take further steps, and we expect that they will continue to react over a longer-term horizon.”

The Hill published a centrist article reporting on how Pelosi critiqued China for increased military and cybersecurity aggression against Taiwan and, in an op-ed, rebutted arguments that the trip violates the One China Policy in which the U.S. recognizes Beijing, and not Taiwan, as the legitimate China government. The article also notes how Pelosi is the first House Speaker since Newt Gingrich (R-GA) in 1997 to visit the island.

A right-leaning article from Fox News discusses how Pelosi believes that her trip to Taiwan displays solidarity amongst nations that “face choice between autocracy and democracy.” Pelosi defended her trip to defend Taiwan and democracy in the face of accelerated aggression from the Chinese Communist Party.
