On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the announcement that she plans to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate next week, despite the fact that she still has concerns over how Republicans plan to conduct the Senate trial. While left-leaning articles highlight Pelosi’s continued criticism of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s impeachment strategies, right-leaning articles attempt to show that Pelosi’s decision to hold on to the articles of impeachment is proof that Trump’s impeachment is just “political play” for Democrats.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post reports that in her letter on Friday, Pelosi criticized McConnell for having a “disregard for the American people’s interest for a fair trial.” In recent days, both Republicans and Democrats signaled that they were ready to move on with the trial. However, in a letter defending her actions, Pelosi argued that polls show an overwhelming number of Americans favor a trial with witnesses and documents after months of Trump denying Congress’ requests for both.

NPR published a centrist article highlighting that McConnell has so far refused to reveal the details of how he plans to manage the trial, except that he plans to follow the general outline established in the 1999 trial of President Bill Clinton. However, Pelosi argues that the Clinton comparison does not apply to Trump, given that McConnell “won’t do a bipartisan agreement on how to proceed.

Fox News published a right-leaning article reporting on comments from former White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who said that Pelosi’s decision to stall releasing the articles of impeachment shows that the impeachment against President Trump is nothing more than a “political play.” Sanders also stated that using impeachment as a political weapon will be a “burden” for Democrats, as they’ve already “made a huge mistake by trying to force this impeachment sham down America’s throats.”
