On Friday, the White House announced that it is imposing additional economic sanctions against Iran, including Iranian government officials. While left-leaning articles highlight that the White House continues to state that last week’s strike on Iranian General Qassem Soleimani was meant to prevent an “imminent threat” against U.S. interests, right-leaning articles report on the Trump administration’s effort to end Iran’s “destructive foreign policy” and terrorist activities.
The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that at a news conference at the White House, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo continued to assert that the decision to kill Soleimani was justified by an imminent threat to United States embassies. The article also makes note that Iran is already under crippling sanctions from the United States. According to a sanctions expert at the Center for a New American Security, the damage to Iran from additional measures will be negligible.
A centrist article by NPR reports that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin outlined 17 specific sanctions against Iran’s largest steel and iron manufacturers, in addition to three entities based in the Seychelles and a vessel involved in the transfer of products. Pompeo stated that the goal of the sanctions “is to deny the regime the resources to conduct its destructive foreign policy,” as they also limit many Iranian government officials from interacting with the U.S. financial system.
A right-leaning article by Fox News reports that Pompeo stated that the sanctions are working and contrasted efforts of the Obama administration, which “opened up revenue streams for Iran.” Mnuchin emphasized that the sanctions are also part of the United States’ commitment to stop the Iranian regime’s global terrorist activities.
