At a campaign event in Exeter, New Hampshire on Monday, former Vice President Joe Biden said that he would consider choosing a Republican running mate if he is the Democratic party’s nominee next year. However, after raising this possibility, Biden said, “But I can’t think of one right now.”

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post reports that on social media, many liberals argue that Biden had taken his efforts to appeal to moderates a step too far. Speechwriter David Sirota tweeted images of news stories about Biden defending Republicans. The article also notes that Biden has previously stated that he would prefer a running mate who is “of color and/or a different gender,” and said he would get “clobbered” by the media for discussing potential vice-president picks when he has not won the nomination.

Reuters published a centrist-leaning article reporting that Biden has regularly spoken about the need to work with Republicans in Congress if he becomes president. The article also states that past presidential nominees, such as the late U.S. Senator McCain, have talked about the idea of crossing party lines.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that other 2020 Democratic contenders have weighed in on the hypothetical bipartisan ticket. While Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders said he’s certainly not going to choose a Republican running mate, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker said on Tuesday that he appreciated the spirit of the idea.
