On Wednesday, violent protests erupted for a second night in Minneapolis over the police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who said “I can’t breathe” as an officer pinned him to the ground. While left-leaning articles highlight the response of 2020 presidential candidates President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, while right-leaning articles highlight the response of Mayor Bill de Blasio, whose outspokenness on police violence is “newfound.”
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that while both Trump and Biden have called for justice for Floyd’s family, both have also praised Minneapolis officials for their response to the officers involved in Floyd’s death. Trump tweeted that he has “asked for this investigation to be expedited” while Biden tweeted that “George Floyd’s life mattered.”
The Hill published a centrist article reporting that police officers fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and other nonlethal equipment, as thousands of Minneapolis residents poured into the streets after Mayor Jacob Frey attempted to calm the city by calling for the four officers involved in Floyd’s arrest to face charges. Further, there is photo and video of businesses burning as looters struck local stores.
New York Post published a post highlighting that Mayor Bill de Blasio called for charges against Minneapolis cops involved in the death of George Floyd. However, De Blasio’s “newfound outspokenness” on police violence comes after years of faltering on whether former NYPD cop Daniel Pantaleo should be fired for the death of Eric Garner in 2014.
