On Monday, Senate Republicans unveiled a $1 trillion coronavirus relief bill. While left-leaning articles highlight that Senate Republicans agreed to allocate a portion of the relief bill to construct a new headquarters for the FBI, right-leaning articles highlight that the relief bill is tailored to an economy that treads the line between a pandemic and recovery.
The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that Senate Republicans agreed to allocate $1.75 billion of their coronavirus relief bill towards the construction of a new D.C. headquarters for the FBI. Democrats are critical of the White House’s demand, stating that the White House has enough money to allocate $2 billion for an FBI headquarters, but say they have no money for food assistance.
NPR published a centrist article reporting that Democrats say the plan doesn’t do enough to support Americans, while Republicans call their bill the HEALS Act, which stands for Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection and Schools Act. One of the biggest disagreements between Democrats and Republicans revolves around Democrats wanting to give unemployed people $600 a week, while Republicans want to lower it to $200.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that the HEALS Act is tailored to an economy that has “one foot in the pandemic and one foot in recovery.” In the HEALS Act, federal unemployment benefits would be extended, but at an additional $200 per week rather than $600.
