On Monday, a group of six U.S. mayors penned a letter to Congress asking for it to pass legislation to block the Trump administration from deploying federal law enforcement to cities without officials’ consent. While left-leaning articles highlight that Trump is using national unrest to build a law-and-order message for his campaign, right-leaning articles highlight that Oregon’s U.S. Attorney said Portland officials should not ban city police from working with federal law enforcement.

The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that President Trump has seized on scenes of national unrest to build a law-and-order message for his re-election campaign. Portland has been the epicenter of the most recent protests, as protesters infuriated by the federal presence in Portland smashed windows and set fires.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that those who signed the letter criticizing the administration include the mayors of Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Albuquerque, N.M., Washington, D.C., and Kansas City, Mo. Trump has vowed to continue deploying federal law enforcement agents to cities, citing an interest in protecting public property.

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Oregon’s U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams told The Oregonian over the weekend that Portland officials were engaged in “nonsensical political theater” by banning city police from working with federal law enforcement. The article notes that protests have been especially politically charged in Portland, with civil rights groups accusing federal agents of making unjustified arrests of protesters in unmarked vans.
