On Thursday, Chief Justice John Roberts sworn in senators to act as jurors for next week’s impeachment trial of President Trump and called on them to render “impartial justice.” While left-leaning articles condemn new media restrictions on the impeachment trial, right-leaning articles release comments from a Republican Senator who dismissed the claim that it is the job of the Senate to “expand” the case for impeachment.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post disproves the restrictions on press coverage of the upcoming trial, as determined by President Trump’s allies in the Senate, primarily Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. These restrictions include preventing journalists from bringing laptops, silenced phones, and cameras, as well as require journalists to clear a newly installed metal detector before entering the media seats.
A centrist article by NPR outlined the upcoming moves of the impeachment trial. Early Thursday afternoon lead House manager Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., formally read the resolution appointing the seven House managers and the two articles of impeachment. Following, Trump will have until noon Monday to submit a brief. Trump will be represented by White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Jay Sekulow in the trial, which will get underway next Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET.
A right-leaning article by Fox News reports on Senate Judiciary Committee Member Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.,’s comment that it is not the job of the Senate to “expand” the case for the impeachment of President Trump. Blackburn also stated that the Senate would not heed House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s warning that if the Senate does not allow the introduction of relevant witnesses and documents the House wants to introduce, they are engaging in an unconstitutional cover-up.
