On Thursday, House Democrats finished their second day of oral arguments and contended that President Trump’s attempt to pressure Ukraine into investigations was an attempt to cheat in the 2020 election in addition to being the kind of behavior the nation’s founding fathers wanted to guard against. While left-leaning articles highlight how impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, showed evidence that Trump has committed acts of wrongdoing, right-leaning articles condemn the Senate impeachment trial for being an exchange of petty remarks.
A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that lead impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, played a clip of Trump in the chamber that portrays him as the ringleader of the scheme to pressure Ukraine for political favors, and not an outsider player. In another clip, Trump also stated that he “would love” to have Mike Pompeo, Mick Mulvaney, and Rick Perry testify, which goes against recent statements.
A centrist article by NPR reports that on Thursday night’s final remarks, Schiff said there is overwhelming evidence that the president has abused power and obstructed Congress. On Thursday, the Democrats focused on Trump’s abuse of power, with the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerrold Nadler giving extended remarks about how Trump’s withholding of military aid to Ukraine was wrong and dangerous.
Fox News published a right-leaning article reporting that White House Counsel Pat Cipollone tore into Nadler’s remarks and demanded that Nadler owes an apology to the Senate, the American people, and the president. The exchange was flagged by Chief Justice John Roberts, who stated that House and Senate members should “avoid speaking in a manner and using language that is not conducive to civil discourse.” Furthermore, the article quotes Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who said, “God help us if we have to listen to Adam Schiff prattle on for 24 hours, non-stop.”
