On Wednesday, House Democrats concluded the first three days of opening arguments in President Trump’s impeachment trial, arguing that Trump must be removed from office for abusing his office and obstructing Congress. While left-leaning articles highlight that the House argued that Trump’s conduct warranted his removal, right-leaning articles highlight that lawmakers struggled to sit through the trial.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times emphasizes that Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the lead House prosecutor, accused the president of pressuring Ukraine for help “to cheat” in the 2020 presidential election. Schiff also insisted in his opening arguments that fairness required hearing from John R. Bolton, the former White House national security adviser, who has pledged to testify if the Senate subpoenas him, and other White House officials.
A centrist article by NPR reports that in his closing remarks, Schiff reminded the chamber of the career civil servants and foreign service officers who were courageous enough to testify about the president’s pressure campaign on Ukraine and even defied orders from the White House not to appear. Schiff argued during his opening remarks that if Trump is not removed from office, the president’s actions “will permanently alter the balance of power among the branches of government.”
Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that restless lawmakers struggled to sit through Schiff’s opening argument, as there were roughly 15 open chairs from GOP senators who had left their desks for the final stretch of his speech. The article reports that even Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said she had a difficult time remaining still during the Senate trial, despite the fact that she regularly has to sit still with her regular D.C.-to-Alaska commute.
