On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump cannot withhold his tax returns and other financial records from prosecutors. However, the rulings meant that the court battle over disclosure would likely continue well past the Nov. 3 election.  While left-leaning articles highlight that the court’s lasting message shows that the president is not above the law, right-leaning articles highlight that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will continue to press for President Trump’s financial records.

The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that while the rulings were a disappointment for those who hoped to see the president’s long-withheld financial records before November’s election, the court’s more lasting message comes from Chief Justice Roberts, who wrote, “In our judicial system, ‘the public has a right to every man’s evidence.” Trump’s lawyers argued in lower court that the president was so immune to local law enforcement that it couldn’t investigate the president even if he shot someone in the street.

USA Today published a centrist article reporting that while both the White House and Democratic leaders seized on the cases as a win, neither side completely got what they wanted, as Democrats sought a wholesale repudiation of Trump’s effort to block congressional subpoenas and Trump wanted the court to curb subpoenas. Biden has released his own tax returns, which showed he has made more than $15 million since leaving the Obama administration, while Trump broke with decades of tradition in 2016 by declining to release his tax records.

The Washington Times published a right-leaning article reporting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the House will continue to press for President Trump’s financial records in lower courts after the Court blocked Congress from getting Trump’s tax returns immediately. Even though the “process will take longer,” Pelosi cheered the court’s decision.
