On Friday, TikTok swiftly responded to Trump’s executive orders to ban TikTok and WeChat in 45 days. While left-leaning articles highlight that Trump’s threat comes a month after a stunt mainly organized through TikTok led to a sparsely-attended Trump campaign rally, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump is only threatening to ban WeChat, and not all companies under Tencent, its parent company.
A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that Microsoft said Sunday that it was pushing forward with talks to acquire the app, but on Monday, Trump set September 15 as the deadline for TikTok to find a US buyer. The President’s threat comes a month after a stunt organized mainly through TikTok led to a sparsely-attended Trump campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
USA Today published a centrist article reporting that TikTok responded to the executive order with a public post saying it is “shocked” by the news, even though Trump has threatened to ban the app for weeks. TikTok claims the government’s concerns aren’t substantiated since it doesn’t share user data with the Chinese government.
A right-leaning article by The Washington Examiner highlights that Trump’s Tencent order only applies to WeChat, and not other companies under Tencent, WeChat’s parent company. The article notes that the Trump administration is correct to view the United States’ economic relationship with China as a matter of national security.
