On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump on two separate articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Lawmakers voted almost entirely along party lines with every Republican opposing impeachment.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post reports that the “polarization” of Trump’s impeachment was “vividly illustrated by the debate on the House floor”, where it became clear that the leaders of the two parties “believe entirely different accounts of what occurred and are motivated by different concerns”. The article notes that Trump’s impeachment by the House will be a defining mark on his legacy, because it cements “on a constitutional level the opposition party’s view that Trump is unfit to serve”.

A centrist article by NPR highlights opinions from both Democrats and Republicans on the decision to impeach Trump. The article notes that while Trump and his supporters say that Democrats support impeachment due to their insecurity surrounding the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, Democrats claim that they are fighting to preserve the integrity of an election where Trump has invited foreign powers to interfere. The article also looks ahead towards the Senate trial, which chief justice of the United States John Roberts must preside over. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. said he will not hesitate to arrange matters in the best way he sees fit for the president and majority Republicans.

A right-leaning article by The Daily Caller concludes with a warning from Republican Texas Rep. Will Hurd, “a frequent critic of the president, …that Democrats were setting a “dangerous precedent” in their efforts to impeach Trump. ‘Today, a dangerous precedent will be set: impeachment becoming a weaponized political tool.’” The article also notes House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer’s comment that Democrats “did not wish” to impeach President Donald Trump which elicited laughter and jeers from Republican lawmakers.
