On Wednesday, President Trump’s campaign announced that it is filing a petition to formally ask election authorities to conduct a recount in Wisconsin’s Milwaukee and Dane counties. While left-leaning articles highlight that Milwaukee is the state’s largest city and Dane County includes the capital of Wisconsin, right-leaning articles highlight that the Trump campaign said that clerks issued absentee ballots to voters in Wisconsin without requiring an application.

A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that Milwaukee County contains Milwaukee, the state’s largest city and home to the largest Black population in Wisconsin, while Dane County includes the state capital of Madison, home to many college-age voters. However, experts have said it’s extremely unlikely the recounts will shift enough votes to overturn Biden’s lead.

NPR published a centrist article reporting the Trump campaign repeated unfounded claims of election fraud and cited “illegally altered absentee ballots.” Even though Wisconsin does not have automatic recounts, a state law allows a losing candidate behind by 1% to file a sworn petition.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that the Trump campaign said that clerks issued absentee ballots to voters in Wisconsin without requiring an application. The Trump campaign said they transferred $3 million to Wisconsin to cover the estimated cost of the recounts.
