On Monday, President Trump announced on Twitter that he would use an executive order to suspend all immigration into the United States in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus. While left-leaning articles highlight Trump’s previous decision to bar asylum seekers, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump’s aides are defending his order to suspend immigration to the United States.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that in recent weeks the Trump administration had already barred asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants from entering the country, leading many advocacy groups to claim that he was using the crisis to further his anti-immigration agenda. The article also reports that protesters have gathered in states all over the country, defying stay-at-home orders and raising the rate of infection.
NPR published a centrist article that Trump has been inconsistent in his message to the American public about the coronavirus pandemic. Trump downplayed the risk early on, oversold the availability of test kits, claimed “total” authority of the crisis and then insisted it’s up to states to manage the response.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that President Trump’s aides and reelection campaign are defending his looming executive order that would temporarily suspend immigration to the United States. The president’s Republican allies in Congress applauded the move. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnaney said the president is “committed to protecting the health and economic well-being of American citizens as we face unprecedented times.”
