The White House and congressional leaders may be near a deal on a new wave of coronavirus relief funding, which would include replenishing a small business loan program that ran out of money. While left-leaning articles highlight various aspects of the new relief fund, right-leaning articles highlight that Democrats held up critical coronavirus relief for small businesses.

A left-leaning article by The Seattle Times highlights that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin described the broad outlines of the package in an appearance on CNN, which would include $300 billion to replenish the emergency fund, $50 billion for the Small Business Administration’s disaster relief fund, $75 billion for hospitals and $25 billion for testing. Republicans have expressed strong opposition to adding money for states and municipalities, saying that Democrats have pushed for unrestricted funds that would subsidize bad fiscal decisions that occurred before the pandemic.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that the upcoming 450 billion stimulus package is more of a gap-filler than an actual new package of money.  There is also talk about a fourth stimulus package that would possibly include more stimulus and less rescue.

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for “playing politics” and holding up critical coronavirus relief for small businesses. McCarthy’s comments came after Senate Democrats last week rejected a request by Senate Majority-Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to give unanimous consent to legislation that would add $250 billion to the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program.
