Late Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a group of Senate Republicans late Tuesday that he doesn’t have the votes to stop Democrats from calling witnesses during the impeachment trial of President Trump. While left-leaning articles highlight how Trump’s defense team failed to vouch for his Ukraine conspiracy theories, right-leaning articles highlight the probability of amending resolutions calling for witnesses.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post emphasizes that president Trump’s defense team spent little time vouching for his Ukraine conspiracy theories, but instead focused mostly on the idea that Hunter Biden’s employment at a Ukrainian gas company was problematic. Trump’s legal team defended the idea that Ukraine could have just interfered in some fashion in the election, but none of the arguments addressed Trump’s actual conspiracy theory about the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
A centrist article by NPR reports that Republicans are confident that they can overcome Democratic subpoenas for new witnesses, despite the fact that they don’t have the votes to do so yet. There has been increased pressure building on senators to hear from former National Security Advisor John Bolton, who Democrats say have a first-hand account of Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.
A right-leaning article by Fox News reports that a Senate leadership source told Fox News that in the event that there is majority support for additional witnesses, Republicans would assess the viability of amending any resolution calling for a particular witness to also include a package of witnesses that wouldn’t win enough support of the Senate. The White House also retains the option to exert executive privilege to block witnesses, such as Bolton, which could end up in a court battle and prove to be risky if Bolton opts to defy the White House’s assertion of privilege.
