Trump’s impeachment trial continues with the last day of questioning before the Senate votes on whether to allow witnesses and additional evidence. While left-leaning articles highlight the flaws in Trump’s impeachment defense that waves away his chief of staff’s admission of quid pro quo, right-leaning articles focus on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s neglect to directly address a question about getting additional witnesses to testify.
The Washington Post published a left-leaning article stating that Trump’s defense in his Senate impeachment trial relies heavily on the “dubious claim” that Trump withheld military and security aid to Ukraine, because he was concerned about corruption in the country, not to spur investigations that would benefit him politically. However, the article cites that on Sunday, a New York Times report revealed that former national security advisor John Bolton states in his upcoming book that Trump tied aid to Ukraine to investigations, while acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney also tied the aid to investigations in October during a news conference at the White House.
A centrist article by Reuters reports that Democrats seem to have fallen short on Thursday with their bid to get enough votes to call witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial, making it likely that he will be acquitted as early as this weekend. However, a 50-50 tie on the question of witness testimony and additional evidence could happen if Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski and Senator Mitt Romney join Republican Susan Collins in breaking with their party and announcing support for witnesses.
A right-leaning article by The New York Post reports that Pelosi sidestepped a question regarding why House Democrats failed to go to court to try to get former and current Trump administration members to testify during the impeachment inquiry. Pelosi stated that if the Senate fails to call witnesses, Trump will not be fully acquitted.
