On Friday, the former US ambassador to Ukraine testified in front of Congress as part of the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Trump; she said that Trump pressured the State Department to remove her from office. Left-leaning articles focus on former ambassador Marie L. Yovanovitch’s claims that Trump and his allies wanted to paint her as disloyal and have her removed from her post, while right-leaning articles focus on Trump’s denial of wrongdoing and insistence that Joe Biden was engaged in improper behavior in Ukraine and centrist articles attempt to describe the increasingly complicated history of Trump’s actions in Ukraine.

A left-leaning article from the New York Times describes at length the situation in which Yovanovitch found herself that led her to believe that the president wanted to oust her from her post. According to Yovanovitch, the article reports, the Trump camp was eager to paint her as a liberal holdover from the Obama administration who may have been a part of efforts to undermine Trump in the 2016 presidential election. According to the article, “Ms. Yovanovitch told House investigators that while she did not know Mr. Giuliani’s motives for attacking her, his associates ‘may well have believed that their personal financial ambitions were stymied by our anti-corruption policy in Ukraine.’”

A right-leaning article from Fox News also reports that the Trump administration wanted to portray Yovanovitch as a rogue employee who was biased against the president. The article also notes that Trump denies that there was a quid pro quo in his request for Ukraine to help him investigate Joe Biden and his claims that the House investigation is a “kangaroo court.” Other right-leaning articles tend to emphasize Biden’s role in the Ukraine affair and to question whether he was involved in improper business in Ukraine. There has been no evidence yet to suggest that that was the case.

A centrist article from NPR summarizes the proceedings of Yovanovitch’s testimony, based on her prepared remarks. The article notes that Yovanovitch has emerged as a valuable witness for the Democrats, as she may be able to provide insight into Trump and Rudy Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine. The article also notes that the Democrats supoenaed Yovanovitch to compell her to testify, as the White House had blocked her from appearing for a voluntary interview. The White House has said that it will not cooperate with the House’s impeachment investigation.
