On Wednesday, Senate Republicans unveiled a law enforcement bill that attempts to curb racial discrimination and police abuses following the death of George Floyd. While left-leaning articles highlight that the bill proposed by House Democrats go further in attempting to curb discrimination, right-leaning articles highlight that Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin called Republican Senator Tim Scott’s crafting of the bill “a token approach.”

A right-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that House Democrats are moving forward with a package that would strictly ban chokeholds and make it easier for victims of police violence to sue officers. However, Scott argued that there is a lot of overlap in the party’s approaches, and that the bill shouldn’t be blocked from being considered on the floor.

Reuters published a centrist article reporting that the law enforcement bill takes a less aggressive approach than the legislation backed by Democrats in the House of Representatives, as it doesn’t allow victims of misconduct to sue the police or ban police chokeholds outright. Democrats say that the legislation simply pays “lip service” to the problem and does not go far enough.

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin apologized to Senator Tim Scott after calling the police reform bill he crafted as the only black GOP senator a “token” approach. Scott responded on Twitter to Durbin’s comments by calling out congressional Democrats last week for wearing African kente cloths.
