On Thursday, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act, which is a $740 billion bill setting policy for the Pentagon that President Trump threatened to veto. While left-leaning articles highlight there is bipartisan support in both chambers for limiting Trump’s ability to withdraw troops in Germany, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump has previously voiced his opposition to the legislation.

The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that there is also bipartisan support in both chambers for limiting Trump’s ability to withdraw 9,500 troops from their station in Germany. However, it is not clear when negotiations will be completed, as House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith guessed earlier in the month that Congress wouldn’t complete its work on a final defense bill until November.

Reuters published a centrist article reporting that the vote was 86-14, which is one of the few times the Republican-led Senate has broken from the president. The Democratic-led House of Representatives also passed its version of the NDAA earlier this week, which included the requirement to change the names of military facilities after generals who fought on the pro-slavery side during the Civil War.

A right-leaning article by The Washington Examiner highlights that Trump previously voiced his opposition to the legislation and has threatened to veto it based on the provision of requiring renaming of military bases. Only four Republicans voted against the bill.
