On Tuesday, Former Vice President Joe Biden castigated President Trump for fanning “the flames of hate,” and called on Congress to address systemic racism and police brutality. While left-leaning articles highlight that Biden’s speech rested on familiarity and empathy, right-leaning articles highlight Biden’s criticism of Trump as being unconcerned with people in his care.
The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that Biden’s speech regarding recent protests rested on familiarity and empathy, as he presented himself as a candidate, who, unlike Trump, is sympathetic to the anger in the streets over the police killing of George Floyd. Biden also announced a proposal to place a ban on police chokeholds, in addition to laying out more robust policies on systemic racism.
Bloomberg published a centrist article highlighting that if elected, Biden would set up a national police oversight commission in his first 100 days, while acknowledging that reform would take time. Biden’s nationally televised speech marked a turning point in his campaign as he sought to reassure a nation on edge from both economic and social unrest.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Biden criticized Trump as being “more interested in serving the passions of his base than the need of the people in his care.” Biden also stressed that the president is more interested in power than in principle, especially when the president used tear gas and flash grenades to disperse peaceful protestors in order to stage a photo op.
