On Tuesday, President Trump ordered military units to rout those peacefully protesting police violence near the White House. While left-leaning articles highlight that retired military leaders condemned their successors for ordering military units, right-leaning articles highlight that President Trump called those who looted the Macy’s flagship store in New York “hoodlums and thieves.”

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that retired senior military leaders condemned their successors for ordering these military units. James Miller, who served as an undersecretary of defense for policy under President Obama and the Defense Science Board, abruptly resigned and told Defense Secretary Mark Esper that he believed the defense secretary violated an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” by backing Mr. Trump’s actions on Monday night.

The Hill published a centrist article reporting that on Tuesday, Trump urged New York City to bring in the National Guard, mocking Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) and his brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, in a tweet. The article notes that the National Guard is on standby in New York but has not been activated.

New York Post published a right-leaning article highlighting that on Tuesday, President Trump lashed out at the “hoodlums and thieves” who looted the Macy’s flagship in Herald Square overnight. Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette said that Macy’s was the wrong target for protesters, due to the company’s “long history of having a workforce that is as diverse as the many communities we serve.”
