Chinese officials and state media have accused American leaders of hypocrisy as protests rage nationwide following the death of George Floyd. While left-leaning articles highlight that a new national security bill will be imposed in Beijing in coming months, right-leaning articles highlight that almost no Chinese internet users sympathize with American police officers.

A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that the widespread unrest has been used to justify a new national security bill that will be imposed upon Beijing in coming months, which Washington has fiercely criticized. The article also notes that Washington is no stranger to accusations of hypocrisy, as during the Cold War, the Soviet Union was often quick to point out many societal issues plaguing the U.S.

Newsweek published a centrist article reporting that Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, tweeted Monday, “We stand firmly with our African friends. We strongly oppose all forms of racial discrimination and inflammatory expressions of racism and hatred.” Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of Global Times, a daily English-language newspaper published by the Chinese Communist Party, tweeted a sarcastic and mocking post writing, “Vicious HK rioters obviously are masterminds of violent protests across the US.”

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that almost no Chinese internet users sympathize with American police officers, adding that the Chinese government and the national People’s Congress “exercised restraint” in not publicly condemning the firing of tear gas on demonstrators. In his editorial, Hu said the U.S. should caution vocally supporting “riots” elsewhere when it could find itself in the same situation while warning American officials.
