On Tuesday, The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee invited President Trump to its first impeachment hearing, scheduled to take place December 4th–starting a new phase of the inquiry. While a left-leaning article from the New York Times urges Trump to testify rather than “complaining about the process”, a right-leaning article from Fox News relays Trump’s desire for members of his party to testify “about the phony Impeachment Hoax.”
A left-leaning article by The New York Times describes the accusation–“$391 million in security aid to put pressure on a vulnerable U.S. ally to interfere in an American election by digging up dirt on his domestic political opponents”–and relays condemning information by inquiry witnesses. The article also discusses the President’s option to testify: "The president has a choice to make: he can take this opportunity to be represented in the impeachment hearings, or he can stop complaining about the process," Nadler said in a statement. "I hope that he chooses to participate."
NPR published a centrist-leaning article that discusses the procedural aspect of the trial–explaining, “Trump has until Sunday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. to alert the Judiciary Committee of any plans to participate and if so, which counsel will represent him. It wasn't immediately clear what the White House might decide; whether White House counsel Pat Cipollone might be present, or other attorneys — or whether the administration might skip Nadler's hearings in furtherance of its long-running protest about what it has called an unfair process.” The article notes, in regard to Trump’s request of Zelenskiy, “Ultimately, the assistance was permitted to resume in September. And Zelenskiy never announced the investigations that Trump desired.”
A right-leaning article by the New York Post relays Trump’s desire for others to testify on his behalf to quell what he calls a “democrat scam that is going nowhere,” as he denies wrongdoing. The article also notes, “new poll numbers show that the Intelligence Committee’s impeachment inquiry failed to move the needle among American voters after two weeks of public hearings. A CNN poll conducted Friday through Sunday and released Tuesday shows that the same number of Americans — 50 percent — back impeaching Trump as the poll found in October. The poll also found that 43 percent don’t believe Trump should be removed from office — again the same as the October survey.”
