On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee opened debate on the two articles of impeachment against President Trump.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times reports that Democrats made their case that Trump put the 2020 election and the nation’s security at risk by using his office to pressure Ukraine and concealing his actions from Congress. Democrats also drew heavily on their own backgrounds and experiences to voice their opinions on impeachment, quoting scripture and referencing their unique biographies. Meanwhile, Republicans voiced their indignation about Democrats refusing to accept Mr. Trump’s legitimacy, portraying their efforts to impeach him as an effort to reverse Trump’s 2016 election victory. In debate, Republicans such as Representative Jim Sesenbrenner of Wisconsin appealed to the ideals of the framers of the Constitution.
A centrist-leaning article by NPR reports that Wednesday’s hearing included opening statements from 40 members on the Judiciary Committee, where each member was given five minutes to speak. Chairman of the Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler argued that the first article of impeachment, which deals with the abuse of power, was the “highest of high crimes.” The article also reports that Republicans stated that Democrats have “lost all moorings of fairness and good taste,” and that the impeachment push is a “tragic mockery of justice.”
A right-leaning article by The Washington Examiner highlights that many moderates face the difficult choice of impeaching President Trump. According to The Washington Examiner, several Democrats from swing districts stated that they have not decided whether to support the articles of impeachment. Amongst these Democrats include Representative Collin Peterson, who is leaning towards a no, and Representative Elissa Slotkin, who is also weighing her vote.
