The decision to impeach Trump has not been reached by House Judiciary Committee members, in addition to some moderate Democrats. While left-leaning articles report that on late Thursday night, the votes on two articles of impeachment against President Trump were delayed by chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler, right-leaning articles highlight pressure faced by moderate Democrats from both sides of the impeachment debate.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post give a breakdown of the moments leading up to Nadler’s call for a recess, which occured around the 13th hour of debate. The article reports that Republican Representative Doug Collins said that Nadler’s decision to delay the vote was “the most ludicrous thing I have seen in my entire life!” Meanwhile, other Republican members pleaded with colleagues to wrap up the impeachment hearing around the 12th hour.
NPR ran a centrist aritcle reporting that House Judiciary Committee Republicans fought against impeaching Trump during the House debate. Republican Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio moved to strike the language of the first article of impeachment, while Republican Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida offered an amendment alluding to the son of former Vice President Joe Biden and the Ukraine company where he was employed.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that the House floor vote to impeach Trump is poised to come down to a few dozen moderate Democrats. Already two Democrats voted against launching the initial inquiry, while Democratic Representative Max Rose stated that he
would not operate on pressure from anyone, and was one of 31 House Democrats from districts where Trump won in 2016. However, few Trump-district Democrats have been outspoken in their support for impeachment.
