Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s decision to pick Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as Vice President has drawn both criticism and support. While left-leaning articles highlight Biden’s journey to settling on Kamala Harris, right-leaning articles highlight that Harris is a progressive, not a moderate.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that Biden winnowed a large list of candidates to four finalists before settling on Kamala Harris, who scored the highest on the Biden campaign’s core criteria for a running mate. In the end, Biden embraced Harris to signal how Biden might be expected to govern as a politician oriented toward seeking consensus and building broad coalitions.

A centrist article by The Hill reports that President Trump levied a series of personal attacks at prominent female politicians, insulting the tone and intelligence of Senator Kamala Harris and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others in the span of just a couple hours. Ocasio-Cortez shot back at Trump, tweeting “Let’s make a deal, Mr. President: You release your college transcript, I’ll release mine, and we’ll see who was the better student. Loser has to fund the Post Office.”

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that the mainstream media has rushed to portray Harris as a moderate, but she campaigned over the past year as an unabashed progressive. The article notes that Media Research Center Vice President Dan Gainor said it’s a “laughable narrative” to label Harris a moderate.
