On Tuesday, Representative Ilhan Omar won a competitive Democratic primary in her bid for reelection in Minnesota. While left-leaning articles highlight that Congressional Democrats have rallied around Omar, right-leaning articles highlight that Omar’s competitor criticized her celebrity status for leaving “her out of touch with the district.”

A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that while Congressional Democrats have rallied around Omar in the wake of attacks from the President, the congresswoman has faced rebuke from members of her own party over “anti-Semitic tropes.” However, Omar has the support of Pelosi, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

A centrist article by USA Today highlights that Omar was challenged by Antone Melton-Meaux, a Black lawyer and mediator, who nearly matched Omar overall and outraising her in the most recent cycle. Omar’s victory Tuesday means that “the Squad,” which includes Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., have a clean sweep in the primaries so far.

A right-leaning article by The Washington Times highlights that the competitive race had Omar fending off Melton-Meaux’s harsh criticism that her celebrity status left her out of touch with the district. The article also notes that Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan defeated Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones by an even larger margin than Omar scored against her challenger.
