A coronavirus aid package costing more than $1 trillion failed the necessary procedural vote in the Senate. While left-leaning articles highlight that the Treasury secretary and top Senate Democrat have almost reached a deal, right-leaning articles highlight Democrats’ obstruction of progress towards a bill.
The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin and top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York stated late Monday that they were on a brink of a deal on an almost $2 trillion emergency economic aid measure to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. Mnuchin also noted that the two called President Trump just before they broke for the night and said that his response was “very positive.”
A centrist article by NPR reports that Democrats blocked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s agenda of rushing the negotiation process in the Senate so they could get to a bill in the coming days. While both parties agree on the main structural parts of the bill, one of the big holdups is that Democrats want more money for unemployment benefits and hospitals. Democrats also want more language in the bill that would clarify how it’s going to help corporations.
Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that after Democrats blocked Republican efforts to advance the stimulus bill, McConnell stormed to the floor to accuse Democrats of “mindless obstruction” that could drag out action for days. After returning to Washington, D.C., from recess, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that Democrats would roll out their own bill. Senate Republicans slammed Pelosi, claiming that she sabotaged all bipartisan efforts in the upper chamber.
