On Monday, Jacksonville, the GOP’s new convention site, announced that it is requiring face masks in public and indoor locations. While left-leaning articles highlight that the mask order will rankle Trump, right-leaning articles highlight that the Republican mayor just declared last week he wouldn’t require masks.

The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that the mask order is almost certain to rankle Trump, who wanted a traditional, packed rally. Democrats claim that Republicans want to use the convention in Jacksonville to shore up votes in Northeast Florida.

A centrist article by USA Today highlights that the move comes as Florida has become one of the new epicenters in the coronavirus outbreak. Last week, former Vice President Joe Biden said he would use federal powers to require face masks in public, as they have become a flashpoint in the political fight surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Washington Times published a right-leaning article highlighting that Republican Mayor Larry Curry had just declared last week that he wouldn’t require masks. Recently a group of nearly 500 Florida-based doctors signed an open letter to Curry that called for the convention to be postponed and urged officials to require masks.
