On Tuesday, former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper won the Democratic nomination to face Republican Senator Cory Gardner in November. While left-leaning articles highlight that Hickenlooper prevailed in a tougher-than-expected race, right-leaning articles highlight that Hickenlooper recently came under fire for ethics issues.
The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that in the past month, Hickenlooper was his own biggest obstacle, as he faced controversies surrounding ethics issues and racially insensitive comments. Although Hickenlooper had a short-lived run for president in the past year, he was considered an ideal Senate recruit for Democrats, as he was a well-known candidate and small-business owner.
The Associated Press published a centrist article reporting that Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff could not overcome both Hickenlooper’s immense financial advantage and his deep name ID. Republicans launched millions of dollars in ads attacking Hickenlooper, although Republicans always expected Hickenlooper to win the primary.
Daily Caller published a right-leaning article highlighting that Hickenlooper recently came under fire when an independent ethics commission found that he had accepted a ride on a private plane to Connecticut and in a limousine while in Italy. The article also notes that Hickenlooper has consistently polled ahead of his opponent, Republican Senator Cory Gardner.
