Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has chosen Senator Kamala Harris as his 2020 running mate. While left-leaning articles highlight that Biden’s selection of Harris represents a decision to go with his “centrist instincts”, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump said he was “a little surprised” Biden chose Harris.
The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that while Harris was Biden’s former rival, she has since emerged as a vocal supporter. Kamala has moved to embrace more liberal causes since ending her presidential bid last year–becoming “a prominent advocate of racial-justice legislation after the death of George Floyd.” However, due to her history as a prosecutor, Biden’s selection of Harris represents a decision to double down on appealing to centrist voters rather than “engage the younger, more progressive voters...who have been most skeptical of Mr. Biden.”
NPR published a centrist article reporting that the country has never had a Black woman as a Vice Presidential running mate. The article also notes that Biden has said he is looking for a running mate who has the ability to step into the job as president, as Kamala is significantly younger than him.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Trump said he was “a little surprised” that Biden chose Harris to be his running mate given her “very poor” primary performance. Harris was reportedly Trump’s “‘number one pick’ to face off against”. During the press conference, Trump also berated Harris’ inconsistencies–in both policies and regard of Biden–calling her “phony Kamala Harris” in his recent ad campaign. With regard to policy, Trump specifically called upon Harris’ “1,900 marijuana convictions...when she later claimed to have smoked the substance.” He also noted how she was previously “very disrespectful to Joe Biden”–referring to Harris “blitz” against Biden in primary debates.
