On Thursday, President Donald Trump’s long-time friend and advisor Roger Stone was sentenced to three years and four months in prison for lying to a congressional committee investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering.

The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who sentenced Stone to three years and four months in prison, called Trump’s attempts to influence the case “inappropriate” and said he did not sway her decision. Meanwhile, Democrats praised the judge’s performance, which showed that the judiciary under Trump still remains independent.

NPR published a centrist article interviewing former federal prosecutor Shan Wu about the 40-month prison sentence handed down to Roger Stone. Wu stated that she believed the original seven to nine years sentence to be a bit unrealistically high, and she expected a sentence in the range of three years. Wu also stated that the judicial branch did a good job of addressing the executive branch through the intermediary of the defendant.

Washington Examiner published a right-leaning article reporting that Fox News host Tucker Carlson pushed back against Jackson’s speech, where she claimed that Stone was prosecuted for covering up for the president. Carlson stated that her statement was untrue, as nobody connected to the president has been charged with a crime related to spying for Russia or colluding with Russia.
