On Monday, seventeen states and the District of Columbia sued President Donald Trump’s administration to block a new rule forcing international college students to leave the United States if they’re only enrolled in online classes in the fall. While left-leaning articles highlight that in lawsuits, universities and state attorneys argue the new guidance is politically motivated, right-leaning articles highlight that ICE said the State Department will not issue visas if students are enrolled in full online programs.
The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were the first to challenge the new visa rules in court. In lawsuits, universities and state attorneys general suggest the new guidance is part of a politically motivated attempt to force universities to reopen.
USA Today published a centrist article reporting that the new rule is a reversal of the federal government’s policy in the spring, when international students were only allowed to attend online-only classes. The lawsuit is led by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, who said the rule would force schools to choose "between keeping their international students enrolled and protecting the health and safety of their campuses.”
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that the lawsuit says the administration fails to consider the tremendous costs and administrative burden their new rule would impose on schools. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also announced that the State Department will not issue visas to students enrolled in full online programs, and that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) would not allow them into the country.
