On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. While left-leaning articles highlight that the court’s decision was mainly provisional, right-leaning articles highlight that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has sided with the court’s liberal wing.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that the court’s decision was provisional and didn’t remove much of the uncertainty that young immigrants face, in that they could be forced to return to countries many of them don’t even remember. In the dissent, Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Justices Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Neil M. Gorsuch said the majority decision was swayed by politics.
A centrist article by NPR reports on an interview with Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois, who said that he hopes the administration doesn’t try to end the program through fixing procedural issues. Durbin also stated that he hopes to pass the DREAM Act, which he introduced twenty years ago, but Senate Leader Mitch McConnell still refuses to bring up.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Senator Tom Cotton said that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts should resign from his position after siding with the court’s liberal wing on the LGBT rights case and in upholding DACA. The article also reports that Trump was critical of the court’s decision and promised to release a list of “Conservative Supreme Court Justice nominees.”
