On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of parents in Montana seeking to use a state scholarship program to send their children to religious schools. While left-leaning articles report that liberal members of the court dissented, right-leaning articles highlight that President Trump called the ruling a “historic win” for school choice.

CNN published a left-leaning article reporting that Tuesday’s opinion is a huge win for supporters of school choice programs, which is a hallmark of the Trump administration. However, liberal members of the court dissented, as Justice Stephen Breyer wrote that the ruling was perverse and that “the Court appears to require a State to reinstate a tax-credit program that the Constitution did not demand in the first place.”

NPR published a centrist article reporting that the court's decision is the latest in a series of recent rulings that have lowered the traditional wall separating church and state by requiring government entities to treat religious and nonreligious institutions more equally. The article notes that experts on both sides agreed that the practical effect of Tuesday's decision is to neuter state constitutional provisions that have limited state aid to religious schools to one degree or another.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that President Trump touted the Supreme Court ruling, calling it a “historic win” for school choice. The article notes that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has long called on Congress to pass a plan for “Education Freedom Scholarships,” which the White House says would give 1 million students the "freedom" to attend the school of their choice.
