On Friday, China and the United States agreed to “phase one” of a trade deal. The deal includes suspending tariffs that were planned to be imposed on Chinese imports, as well as tariffs already in place.

A left leaning article by The Washington Post gives an overview of the trade deal. The United States offered to halve existing tariffs, both sides agreed not to manipulate their currencies, and tariffs would be imposed on China again if China violates the terms of agreement. However, “phase one” still excludes the most conflicting issues for later rounds of negotiations.

NPR ran a centrist article reporting that Trump tweeted that Beijing has agreed to “many structural changes and massive purchases of Agricultural Product, Energy, and Manufactured goods.” These structural changes mean that under the deal, China will purchase an unspecified amount of American products. The article notes that China also confirmed in a press conference in Beijing that a deal was reached.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights praise for the trade deal from Wang Shouwen, China’s vice minister for commerce, who said, “It is beneficial for China and the U.S. to strengthen cooperation in the economic and trade field,” and the Business Roundtable, who said, “This de-escalation in trade tensions is a positive step towards resolving important trade and investment issues between our two nations.” The article also states that the developments gave Trump his second major trade victory in a week amongst impeachment charges of abuse of power and obstruction of congress.
