In a statement on Thursday morning, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives would move ahead with drafting articles of impeachment against President Trump.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times reports that Pelosi invoked the Constitution in her announcement to show that Mr. Trump had violated his oath of office by pressing a foreign power to assist him in the 2020 election. The House Judiciary Committee also laid out the next steps for the impeachment inquiry, which includes a hearing on Monday that would allow the Intelligence Committee to formally present evidence in the inquiry.
A centrist article by NPR reports that Democrats have disagreed over whether the articles of impeachment should be narrowly drafted to focus on Ukraine, or broadened to include former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Meanwhile, at a news conference, Pelosi reacted angrily to a question about whether she hates the president, and in response, Trump tweeted that Pelosi had “a nervous fit.”
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that former special prosecutor Ken Starr appeared on “The Brian Kilmeade Show” on Fox News Radio and said he was shocked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “abuse of power” in the impeachment inquiry. Starr also noted that the impeachment effort lacked bipartisan support, and predicted that Senate Republicans would dismiss the case entirely instead of moving to a trial.
