On Monday, President Trump called Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, “pathetic” after Birx was criticized by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. While left-leaning articles highlight that Birx lost support in the scientific and medical community for seeming to minimize the virus, right-leaning articles highlight that Fox News Radio host Guy Benson said Pelosi is a “slimeball politician.”

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that while Birx became a prominent figure both inside and outside the White House for publicly championing the administration’s coronavirus response, she soon lost support within swaths of the scientific and medical community for seeming to minimize the virus. Birx had an earlier controversial moment when she defended Georgia’s reopening in April, which included tattoo parlors and hair salons.

A centrist article by Newsweek reports that shortly after Pelosi criticized Birx of “enabling” the president’s alleged spread of coronavirus disinformation, Trump tweeted, "So Crazy Nancy Pelosi said horrible things about Dr. Deborah Birx, going after her because she was too positive on the very good job we are doing on combatting the China Virus, including Vaccines & Therapeutics. In order to counter Nancy, Deborah took the bait & hit us. Pathetic!" Pelosi made similar comments criticizing Birx and her response to the pandemic on Sunday during ABC’s This Week.

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Fox News Radio host Guy Benson said on “The Guy Benson Show” that Pelosi showed herself to be a “slimeball politician” by her attacks on Birx’s character. According to Benson, Pelosi feels emboldened to make these outrageous statements because she rarely gets pushback except from conservative media.
