The governors of New York and California have formed alliances with their respective neighbors to coordinate an eventual easing of COVID-19 shutdowns. While left-leaning articles highlight conflicting orders between state governments and President Trump, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump is looking at reopening the economy by May 1.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that while governors announced they were forming regional working groups to help plan when it would be safe to ease restrictions, Trump asserted in a White House news briefing that the authority to make decisions rested with him. The article notes that conflicting orders by Washington and state capitals leave business and workers in the untenable position of deciding which level of government to listen to.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that governors stressed that they will let science, not politics, determine when to lift social and business restrictions. The Eastern coalition of states, which include New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Delaware, are forming a council consisting of each state’s public health expert, economics expert, and governor.

A right-leaning article by New York Post highlights that Trump’s comments are at odds with previous remarks where he said he didn’t want to overrule governors on matters regarding closures and coronavirus structures. Trump is currently looking at reopening the economy by May 1, colliding with state leaders who are pushing back.
